It has happend to me. I started to a site https://www.colorsandfonts.com ( I am redesigning the whole thing ) and i have been putting up content and giving free stuff. This works…
I posted on reddit ( https://www.reddit.com/r/webdev/comments/dzf6kx/i_made_a_website_for_web_developers_and_digital/ ) about my site and a product owner wanted me to be the lead designer for his startup, even offered me half of it.
I have between 10k and 14k users every month and 5
600 subs.
